1. The idea about the Basic Components

Manuals give an idea that access control systems widely vary in complexity levels and types. But most of these comprise of a minimum of 3 simple components:

  • Infrastructure – Access Control Servers, Access Control Panels, and Electric Door Lock Hardware.
  • Admin Facing – API, Integrations or Access Management Dashboard.
  • User-facing – Access Control Keypad, Card Reader and Access cards.

2. Type of Access Control

The manual also clearly mentions whether there is an onsite server along with access control systems that are hosted locally. The main options include:

A, Cloud-Based Access Control

In these types, the access permissions are stored on the cloud and not on a local server. Thus, the admin can use a browser to manage the permissions from anywhere, whether from home or even while being on vacation. This is an attractive system for security managers who are responsible for supervising facilities in multiple locations.

B, Smartphone or Mobile-Based Access Control

This type of control operates on a similar principle as email accessed by mobile. After users download an app, they can access emails and respond to the same as long as they are able to type in proper sign-in data. A similar process applies to access control that is smartphone-based. After authorization, users can download the app for access control to their own smartphones and be able to log into their own user account and choose the right doors to open after the authorization keys come up.

C, IoT-Based Access Control

Every door reader is linked to the web and come with firmware that may be updated, whether for adding the latest functionalities or for security purposes.

D, Installation Process

An access control system installation manual makes the process of setup simpler. Technicians can understand how to set up the system, connect the wiring, and establish a connection and more. Manuals have a diagram of the wiring and the chip inside the unit. This helps technicians install a network easily, and make it work as per manufacturer instructions.

It is important for all residential, commercial or industrial buildings to have a structured and integrated security risk management plan, and an access control system that is installed professionally needs to be a part of this type of a management plan. Codes and Standards play a big role in making sure that the system is set up well, to satisfy the exact operational needs and requirements of every individual application. Manuals help to understand that the technology powering the system has been tested, assessed and certified, and can guarantee the safety of buildings. Owners and tenants can be assured of more peace of mind and protection.

E, Troubleshooting Information

With the latest access control systems, administrators can configure permissions remotely or even ask for support from the vendor. Manuals make it easier for technicians to spot issues and troubleshoot systems with the help of the instructions given therein. Issues, whether small or big, can easily be fixed with the directions offered by the manufacturer.

Manuals usually state the common problems that arise in access control systems and how to fix them in a proper way. Other than troubleshooting, these guides also state how owners or administrators can monitor the system. Administrators can get real-time notifications from online access control systems in case there is any attempt to breach the security or any irregularity in any of the access points of the unit. In case of any issue, owners can refer to the manual and immediately investigate the problem and be able to record the event.

A manual can be useful for administrators for a proper access control systems installation as well as for meeting various challenges, troubleshooting issues, maintaining security, offboarding and onboarding users, adding fresh access points and more.

Admin can also audit the physical access control, which is important for any type of business. It can also help satisfy some special needs of specific sectors. Businesses often need to review systems on a regular basis and ensure that everything is effectively set up on the access control system. Owners have to find out whether someone who has left the organization is still left in the access control system, and should immediately be removed from the list of authorized personnel. But this is not regarded as the best choice for the purpose of security. For higher security, you may designate a separate pin to every individual user who is associated with a central control system.
  • Facial recognition – It basically depends on the recording and detecting facial metrics. When workers are registered for the system, a photo is taken which is used later for comparing at the door. They use high-resolution cameras to take photos of respective individuals. For facial identification, 3D image matching and other technologies are used.
  • Card credentials – Giving a credential or a card with a unique number to each worker is another way to enhance security. These cards have radio frequency identification (RFI) type systems with an encrypted number.
  • Fingerprint authentication – There are various technologies and systems available for reading fingerprints. These may use pressure sensitive materials or a scanner and obliterate worries of cards getting stolen or lost.

Various kinds of business establishments – whether it comes to banks, hotels, offices or financial institutions – are increasingly using these types of systems.

1, Advantages of Door Access Control Systems

These types of security systems come with plenty of advantages for users:

High Security

These systems come with fantastic security features, such as card management options, 24/7 monitoring, and video surveillance among others. A high-tech system is also capable of restricting access to specific areas for particular individuals. It can have biometric scanner options, such as iris scanners and fingerprint scanners. The most powerful systems depend on a service that monitors users over the web. It makes things more convenient for businesses, as there is no need to have a control center in the office. A regular online setup can be enough to replace the same.

Features

An ideal access control system has plenty of features that can match the exact building it is being used for. Some systems are only designed to control just a specific number of access points or users. Any system that is set up has to deal with the organization’s actual size.

Reports

A lot of advanced systems are able to issue reports about employees’ activity or movement. Thus it can be easy to find out when a worker or staff try to gain entry to an unauthorized area.

With a trustworthy service, users can get external support if there are problems or concerns arising. A number of access control system providers offer fast support via email, telephone or live chat. There are also video tutorials, educational documents, FAQ sections, and other resources offered.

2, Types of Door Access Control Systems

Door access control systems come with different kinds of locking mechanisms, and you can get high-security levels. Find out about the various kinds of door access control systems.

Card readers

These read data that is contained within integrated circuits. Such kinds of intelligent cards are used in various applications, including access control, SIM cards, ATM cards, and credit cards. The information in a smart card, as compared to that of magnetic stripe cards, cannot be deleted, changed or read easily. It is difficult to get access to the integrated circuit unless it is disassembled physically. Even in that case, not all the data can be easily procured, given the fact that disassembling it physically can damage the chip in some way.

Biometric locks

These types of locks are used often by government facilities or major companies for restricting access. Biometric locks, as compared to other locking systems, read the traits of an individual to be able to operate. Retina scanners and Fingerprint scanners are two examples. These are effective but costly and are used typically in high-profile companies or government facilities that deal with sensitive information.

Although these are very effectual in function, there are privacy issues and many people feel that the efforts involved with using biometrics is not worth the effort. On the other hand, there are people who feel that these locks offer the only close to operating 100% foolproof solution for enhancing security. Irrespective of how these are looked at, one cannot deny the fact that these are extremely effectual today in making establishments safer from the rising rate of crime and criminals.

Keyless locks

These can offer a higher level of security due to the reason that these function with programmable code. It only lets in people who have the codes to unlock and lock doors. There is no need for replicating keys and no lock that burglars can break.

However, these locks depend on electricity and can be rendered useless by a power failure. During these times, alternative exit methods or means should be in place. It is also important to arrange for backup power, in order to disallow locking in or out of users.

Electronic gates

Automated or electronic locks might not be used as widely as keyless locks. However, these manage to be extremely popular in niche markets. These are frequently a regular fixture in big mansions and estates and are designed to be opened and closed electronically without the need to be operated manually.

As can easily be understood, there are various options for business owners to enhance security. One or more systems can be used in combination in cases where businesses need foolproof security solutions. Other than these, usage of alarm systems, motion sensors, guard dogs and security personnel might be needed. Regardless of how a business establishment owner wants to go about the process, he/she should only buy apartment building access control systems from reputed and licensed security system dealers using the most updated technology.

Door Access Control Systems are important to make sure that only authorized individuals to get access to facilities. There are various options that let you authenticate each entry to your organization. At workplaces, Door access authentication systems may include everything – whether it comes to entering particular numbers over a keypad that is put at the prime entrance for biometric authentication. Each type can offer a varied level of security, have a varied cost and a different type of working mechanism. There are plenty of access control systems benefits.

1, How Do Access Control Systems Work?

These are logically controlled, and you can program them to allow safes, roller doors, gates and doors be easily accessed under particular guidelines. These specific rules and guidelines often comprise of who may, at what time and in which areas.

Input

It may be as basic as a key switch or can be more secure such as including the use of pin code and a code pad. Also, there can be improved security such as a special encrypted card reader that is frequently referred to as a proximity reader. In some cases, a biometric reader scans the finger or eye. Optimal security can include a blend of inputs such as a key switch, eye scan, pin code or proximity card.

Outputs

After the triggering of input, the information is passed to the controller. The controller decides whether you have the privileges to access. The output is triggered in case of access rights. An output device can be the opening of a gate, an electronic lock, etc.

Controller

This is the brain and heart that operates the outputs and inputs. Controllers, most commonly, are available in 4-door, 2-door or single-door models. You can often just combine several controllers in order to control more doors.  The controllers are used commonly on gates and in banks, offices, factories, warehouses, buildings, and airports.

Access Privileges

These let you decide how much security is required for your door. The success of these kinds of systems is decided by the access privileges that users can get. The simplest way of setup access is to allow each person to pass anywhere at any time, although a very convenient system is not a secure system. You have to determine whether you need security or convenience, or a mix of both.

2, How Can Access Control Systems Help You?

These can offer the highest control over the individual having access to business facilities. An access control system provides your workers with an optimal amount of protection. Lots of business owners get overwhelmed by such systems, especially owners of small businesses who might have just a single entry access point. These types of systems are fully scalable and may be workable solutions for businesses of any size.

Some of the main benefits of access control systems are:

Restricted Access

These systems make sure that just authorized people are let into business premises, thus managing to keep out undesirable people and strangers. These systems tend to vary, and it rests on you about the kind of system that is ideal for your business. It can be iris recognition, code access or swipe card access.

The systems that are installed most often use fobs, proximity cards, and staff ID. This signifies that access may be granted only when an authorized fob or card is held to a reader and then approved. It is worthwhile to note that once doors are closed, they lock immediately – further boosting security.

Internal doors may be even access controlled, which ensures that staffs are permitted only inside their own authorized zones. It is often carried out for the preservation of secret data and making sure that there is no leaking of information to other staffs.

Car Park Barriers

Before unauthorized people are allowed entry into business premises, they usually have to move through a car park. In case it is access controlled, the unauthorized will be prevented from driving into a car park with a vehicle – which can discourage access of such people to the building.

With open staff car parks, there is the problem that these spaces are often taken up by non-staffs given that obtaining a parking space may be a huge issue at times in case you do not have any designated space for your needs.

What are the Problems of Access Control Systems?

There are various disadvantages of access control systems.

For instance, keypads need you to use a particular pin. For higher security, you may designate an isolated pin to every specific user who is connected to a central system of control.

With Card credentials, you can enjoy higher security than most other systems. But there can be an issue if the credential gets lost or stolen.

At times, Fingerprint authentication systems can fail to detect a registered fingerprint in case your fingerprint gets worn-out or your fingers are soiled.

Door Access Control System Wiring Diagram is always important for your access control project, you must pay a lot of attention to it and make sure all wiring is connecting in the right way.

Also, the access control system wiring diagram includes a lot of wiring systems, like magnetic door lock wiring diagram, push to exit button wiring diagram, electric door strike wiring diagram and magnetic door lock wiring diagram and etc.

1, The wiring cables from the access control card reader to the access controller

We suggest using 8 cores stranded shielded twisted-pairs cable to connect reader and controller, (of which 3 cores were used as a backup. If it is unnecessary to feedback legal-card by voice and light of reader, we can disconnect LED cable). It is better to twist Data1 and Data0, and the sectional area should be above 0.22mm², the length should not exceed 100m. Shielded cable connect the GND of Controller. It is a good way to improve the performance of Reader by overstriking or compounding the cables. (Of course, other Cat5e Stranded SFTP cables can also be used).

2, The wiring diagram from a push exit button to access controller

we suggest to use 2 cores cable, the diameter is above 0.3mm²

3, The wiring cable from the electric door lock to access controller

We suggest to use 2 cores electronic cable, sectional area is above 1.0 mm². It is better to use less than 100 meters, and if the distance exceeds 50meters, we should use thicker cable or use multi-cable in parallel.

The cable from Door Contact to Controller, we suggest using 2 cores cable, diameter above 0.22mm². If you do not need to know more functions, such as knowing the door status online or alarming if the door was not closed for a long time and break-ins, then door contact cable can be uninstalled.

Communication cable :(from the controller to controller, controller to computer)

485 Communication Systems:

Cable from the controller to controller and controller to a transmitter, we suggest to use 8cores Shielded twisted pairs cable, the wire diameter is 0.22mm² or more 485+ and 485- must be mutually twisted, the rest 6 cores were backup, and shielded cable can be unconnected. If the communication runs smoothly, we can use shielded cable to connect the GND of a controller or install 120Ω terminal resistance to improve the communication performance between 485+ and 485- in the last controller of 485 total lines. Theoretically speaking, the length of 485 lines can reach 1200m, we suggest to use less than 800m according to the numbers of controllers or complexity of communication environment. If the length is over 800m, please use 485HUB or repeater to improve the communication environment. The connection between controller to the controller must be hand in hand type total line structure, resolutely eradicate branch or star connection.

TCP/IP Communication System

Same as internet structural cabling, we use a normal cable to connect a controller to HUB, distance is less than 100 meters. The longer the distance, the higher the quality of the line. We suggest using brand cables.

Other tips:

  • All cables should be on the pipe in order to avoid any troubles caused by mouse, PVC or galvanized pipe are both OK.
  • Although the controller designed with good anti-static, lightning protection and leakage prevention, please ensure that the controller cabinet and AC earth wire are connected perfectly, and the AC earth wire is grounded.
  • Please do not often pull out the connector, please do corresponding welding work before you ensure to plug the connector.
  • Please do not remove or replace the chip of the controller, an unprofessional operation will damage it.
  • It is not recommended that you connect with other additional equipment without authorization. All unconventional operations, please be sure to communicate with our engineers.
  • Please do not connect the controller and other large current equipment to the same power supply socket.
  • The installation height of the card reader button is 1.45m away from the ground, which can be properly adjusted according to the customer’s using habits.
  • The controller is recommended to be installed in a weak electric well, which is easy to maintain.
  • Please pay attention to standard connection, do not expose the metal part too much, so as to avoid the short circuit and the communication fault.
